A lawsuit against Sony is currently pending, demanding $5.9 billion USD from the business for allegedly "ripping off individuals" through the sale of downloadable games for the PlayStation. According to a recent Sky News article, a consumer rights group in the U.K. led by Alex Neill has filed a lawsuit against the Japanese gaming giant, alleging that it charges predatory and anti-competitive prices for the digital versions of its games. According to the petition, Sony charges a 30 percent fee on all games and microtransactions purchased through its online store, raising the price for customers. Up to nine million customers could share in a settlement from the case that would cost between $79 and 61 USD. Neill announced, “The game is up for Sony PlayStation.” “With this legal action, I am standing up for the millions of U.K. people who have been unwittingly overcharged. We believe Sony has abused its position and ripped off its customers.” PlayStation is not the only business that levies a 30% commission. Epic Games sued Apple in 2021 for the same reason, demanding the same price for transactions made through the latter's app.
