A non-student from Jackson, Mississippi, was detained Thursday morning in connection with the kidnapping and rape of a Southeastern Louisiana University student on campus.

According to the university, Demetris Harris, 19, was arrested for aggravated kidnapping, first-degree rape, and handgun possession.

Harris, who is not a student at the institution, chose his victim at random as he drove through campus at 8 a.m., according to Southeastern Police Chief Michael Beckner. Harris had recently moved to Hammond from Mississippi, according to police.
