Manny Fresh Talks Not Sequencing “400 Degreez”, Previews New Song W/ Mos Def + MORE (VIDEO)5/30/2014 Mannie Fresh is one of the most accomplished music producers of the past 15 years and claims to have over 200 songs in the stash. In his recent interview with NPR’s Mircophone Check, the self-proclaimed “Manny Glover” speaks on not sequencing Juvenile’s first album, recording with Mos Def and more.
After naming Juvenile’s debut album 400 Degereez was the best representation of Mannie Fresh’s signature sound, Mannie revealed how there was no sequencing involved in the making of the album. According to Fresh, the recording session were reminiscent of old Motown sessions of the 70s: Pretty much like if it was an old Marvin Gaye/Motown session. We pretty much had a count-off and we played. We played for however many bars that song was. Juvie rapped those songs next to use while we were playing. On some of the songs, you can kind of hear where it’s 14 bars in his rap instead of 16 so we had to improvise to make the hook work. Mannie Fresh admits that Mos Def’s recording process is “weird” but they are finishing up the upcoming collaborative album OMFGOD. Detailing their recording process, Fresh admits that recording with Mos Def involves lectures: We have to listen to him talk, for about two or three hours about life. [Laughs] We got to let him get it all out. He has to give us all of his conspiracy theories and all of that and all of this. Then we like, “ok, dude, you good? You ready?” He’s like, ‘Okay, I’m ready.” Fresh previewed a new song from their upcoming album, entitled “Let’s Go” that features. Speaking about the influence of technology on music production, Fresh says it has caused a rift between “producers” and “beatmakers”: When you have something do it for you. It’s nothing wrong with saying ‘ok, I can get an app or a plug-in that’s an 808 plug-in. But, when I buy something and it can, I guess, imitate and emulate the beat, then I’m not really working. You have things now that you can buy that pretty much have chords in it. That have piano patterns in it. Well, why do I have to work? That’s why we have to define things between ‘beatmakers’ and ‘producers’. During last night’s Code Conference in Rancho Palos Verdes, California, Iovine took a shot at competing streaming service Spotify’s current popularity.
Spotify debuted in the United States in July 2011 and has since garnered 10 million paying subscribes globally. However, the streaming service has only been able to garner 3 million paying subscribers in the United States after three years. According to Iovine ““Spotify should have 10 million people in America”, even with Beats Music reportedly struggling to gain subscribers. Beats Music debuted in January of 2014 and in its first 100 days was reported to have accumulated a paying subscriber base “in the low six-figures”. Comparatively, Spotify attracted roughly 600,000 paid subscribers in United States in its first year. Iovine used his history in the music industry to explain why Beats’ slow popularity growth is not that big of a problem: When you’re making music, you don’t look at what’s going on in the studio next to you. We run our race. We market our race. After claiming tha Beats spent “zero dollars” on marketing in the first three years, relying solely on media attention, Iovine stated him and Dr “knew how to harness the media.” Besides vaguely explaining his and Dre’s role at Apple, he does explain why the two chose to work with the tech giant: [Me and Dr. Dre] met with the guys, and what we realized is they get it. They have feel. They understand culture. Apple is set to hold an event at the Worldwide Developers Conference this Monday (June 2nd). Check out Beats by Dre and Apple’s first advertisement below: Two years ago, B.G. was sentenced to 14 years in prison for weapons possession and witness tampering. In an EXCLUSIVE interview with AllHipHop, former fellow Hot Boys member Turk spoke about a “legal loophole” that could help B.G. return from his prison sentence as soon as this year and more.
Three months after B.G. was sentence to his 14 year prison sentence, Turk was released from Forrest City Prison in Arkansas after serving nine years in prison for weapons’ violation: I had 22 years, so I gave 12 years back on an appeal. Not no snitching. He ain’t coming home on no snitch pass. When he come home, he done found a loophole in the law. Which they gave him more time than they were supposed to give him. Turk spoke on speaking with Boosie following his recent prison release this year and possible upcoming collaborations for Turk’s untitled new album: I got on the phone with Boosie, probably two or three days since he came home. Boosie working righ tnow. I sent him a record. Waiting on him to deliver on that. If it make it on time, it’ll be on my time, if not, just be looking on music from me and Boosie. The former CEO of Microsoft Steve Ballmer has seemingly become the new owner of the Los Angeles Clippers.
Ballmer has submitted a $2 billion offer to buy the team, a record bid for an NBA team. The the business man’s bid bested Oprah Winfrey, David Geffen, Larry Ellison and others looking to purchase the basketball franchise. Only the $2.1 billion Magic Johnson and The Guggenheim Partners paid for the Los Angeles Dodgers tops Ballmer’s offer. Donald Sterling recently signed a letter to give him wife authorization to field offers for the team and she has accepted this bid, reports the Los Angeles Times. Sterling, who was decimated in the court of public opinion for racist comments, has to agree for the sale to be finalized. Previously, he has vowed not to sell at all. Ballmer lives in Seattle, but has promised to keep The Clippers in Los Angeles. He is worth $20 billion. Did Dr. Dre become Hip Hop’s first billionaire? No, but he is closer than anyone else. Today (May 28th), it was officially announced that Dr. Dre’s Beats by Dre has been sold to Apple for $3 billion. During a recent interview, Apple CEO Tim Cook, Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine discussed the historic deal and what it means for both brands.
The deal for the leader in the premium headphone market was originally speculated to be for $3.2 billion, however the deal reportedly stalled for unspecified reasons. Apple’s CEO Tim Cook, Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine spoke about the deal earlier today for USA Today. Cook does not give any concrete details on what Dre and Iovine’s roles will be at Apple, however does state their importance: Dre and Jimmy bring us the artists’ lens. We’ve had that from a relationship point of view but there’s nothing like having that under our roof, that expert ear of audio. So when you take all of those intangibles, you get excited. Apple has a scheduled Worldwide Developers Conference this Monday (June 2nd) and Cook promises “Apple will be doing some great things in the near term that are exciting and you’re going to love them.” Iovine describes the deal as one that will help relations between music distributors and labels: They feel like one of them has gotten into a game where they can have impact. Where what we do will be understood. We’ve managed to bridge those worlds, because we come from music but we’ve worked in software and hardware. According to the article, Dre was silent for most of the interview except to chime in on the financial benefit of this deal on his personal banking account: Financially I’m in a place I never dreamed of. Now I’m just ready to get started with the work. Hours before the Beats by Dre sale was announced, Interscope Record’s President and Chief Operating Officer John Janick will succeed Jimmy Iovine as Interscope Records’ Chairman and CEO. Now that the Beats Electronics/Apple deal has been official announced, and Beats co-founders Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre are taking on roles at the company, Iovine has stepped down from his old job as Interscope Geffen A&M chairman and CEO.

The 36-year-old executive began working under Iovine at IGA in 2012. There were sources inside the company who claimed that Janick, serving as Interscope’s president and chief operating officer, was already effectively running the label before the Beats announcement. “To have been able to work alongside Jimmy Iovine and contribute to the current success of Interscope Geffen A&M–three of the most storied brands in music—has been an extraordinary privilege,” stated Janick. “Now to be appointed Jimmy’s successor and be in a position to carry on his tradition of creative excellence and innovation is a truly humbling honor.” IGA is currently home to some of music’s biggest stars including Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, Mary J. Blige, Lady Gaga, and M.I.A. “John Janick has exactly what it takes to lead Interscope Geffen A&M: he started his own label, he understands the art of making records and the unique dynamic between a record label and artist, as well as the enormous responsibility that comes with representing one of the greatest artist rosters ever assembled,” added Iovine.
