A couple weeks ago, VIc Mensa returned to usual form on his "Heir to the Throne" freestyle. Raw flow, clear talent. He even dissed Travis $cott. The Chitown emcee, Roc Nation singee and Kanye West collaborator follows up that solid performance with another freestyle, "Heat It Up."
I mean, it seems Vic is out to prove to haters like me he can rap in the mainstream, because recent releases like "U Mad" and "No Chill" leave me wondering where the dude who made "Down on My Luck" and "Orange Soda" went. With these last two freestyles, he's showing he's still got the ability. Now let's see this on your next album.

Future Hendrix is a nice man. for the people to codeine'd up to not understand his music, he's start a track-by-track breakdown of his first No. 1 album, DS2. The Atlanta Gawd broke down the first three tracks of his LP in a new video, saying of his album: "You may not drink lean, but when you listen to this music, it's going to make you feel high." That's a helluva
Memphis native Young Dolph keeps his 16 Zips moving with a video for the Zaytoven-produced standout, "They Watchin." Check it out up top.
Music sales just aren't what they used to be. The days of going platinum with a sense of ease are long gone. Now, most artists are scratching and clawing just to reach gold status. Outside of Taylor Swift, there hasn't been another artist (in any genre) to sell over a million copies of their album this year – until now.
Drake's If You're Reading This It's Too Late sold another 8,000 copies this week – shouts to Meek? – officially earning platinum statusat 1.007 million sold. If you're keeping track at home, this marks Drake's fourth platinum album, following 2010's Thank Me Later (1.8 million), 2011's Take Care(2.26 million), and 2013's Nothing Was The Same (1.72 million). Boosie Badazz is in a good place right now. Out of jail for the last year and change, he would release his anticipated return LP Touch Down 2 Cause Hell in May 2015 to positive reviews. In the latest music video from the album, he could easily flaunt the opulence he's returned to since coming home, but he'd rather use the visuals as a means of providing hope for those who continually grind it out in search of their own dreams as well.
Oh, and then there's a pool party with a boatload of bikini-clad women as well. You can't spell "opulence" without "scantily-clad," right?
A week after delivering the triumphant "Vacation (Whole Week)," Pellis back with a follow-up single.
Currently on the road with Kehlani, the New Orleans emcee faces the truth head on with the Like Minds-produced "Vanilla Sky." Check it out below, and expect new music this fall, as Pell has been in and out of the studio with TV On The Radio’s Dave Sitek. “Often it’s hard to take criticism, especially when it’s coming from the ones you love. Sometimes I run from these criticisms, even when it’s not the best decision. It’s important to make sure you listen to those around you because they can reveal certain things about yourself to which you may be oblivious. The truth may hurt but it’s all that matters.” – Pell Damn...
It is with beyond a heavy heart that Duck Down Music is sadly confirming that Sean Price passed away early this morning in his Brooklyn apartment, Saturday, August 8th, 2015. The cause of death is currently unknown, but it was reported that he died in his sleep. He’s survived by his wife, and his three children. Sean Price, who turned 43 in March of this year, was a beloved rap artist. He was 1/2 of the group Heltah Skeltah, a key member of the Boot Camp Clik, and a successful solo artist, known simply as Sean Price. Sean’s family and friends are asking for time to grieve and process the news. Further details will be issued when more information is available. Man, where do I start? Sean Price was the man! If you've been visiting the site over the years, you know how big of fans Mek, JES and myself are. From his early days with Boot Camp Clik and Heltah Skeltah, to his solo affairs and time with Random Axe alongside Guilty Simpson and Black Milk. His ability on the mic was unmatched – no one did it like P! A few years back, I was lucky enough to spend sometime with Ruck, when I helped shoot this hilarious clip of him trying to sell a "historic" potato to Chumlee at The World Famous Gold & Silver Pawn Shop (aka... the home of the History Channel's Pawn Stars). We'd met before, and he always saluted the DopeHouse, but being able to interact with him on a personal level was a treat. He was a real one.
A week after Dr. Dre announced (and ultimately released) his new album, OVO Sound Radio returned to Apple Music's Beats1 with a pair of special guests: Future's longtime turntablist DJ Esco and his young go-to producer Metro Boomin.
Once again, October's Very Own co-founder Oliver El-Khatib kicked off the show, and – as we've come to expect, he let loose a couple exclusive tracks from Skepta xx and P. Reign. Then, it was EscoBoomin's turn, and the duo delivered an hour-long, high-energy set. I believe the children of the world refer to this as "lit," no? Anyways, listen to their set below. The King of Memphis drops off a video for two of his freestyles off hisThe Return of Cocaine Muzik EP. First, Gotti performs his take on Rico Richie's "Poppin" in the studio, before stepping into a dark alley to run through Future's DS2 standout, "Trap N*ggas."
The Art of Hustle, coming soon – we hope.
Kellz is back.
The Chicago R 'n' B legend is set to release a new album, Buffet, on September 25, and we now have its lead single, "Backyard Party." R. Kelly is happy it's the freakin' weekend, but he's nowhere near as turned up as he was on "Ignition." "Backyard Party" is a simple, enjoyable cookout jam, as Kelly invited the whole family to hang out on a hot summer day. As Kellz's career has wind down, it seems, based on the single, his aggressive, sexual ways are winding down too. I guess we'll see when Buffet comes out. Listen to "Backyard Party" below.
Young Tauheed will crank out his formal return to the mixtape game with his forthcoming Trapavelli Tre on August 13th. As such, he has also let loose details for the upcoming project, which will have features from Wiz Khalifa, Kevin Gates, The-Dream, Young Dolph and more. Track eleven easily has the best title of the entire project.

Earlier this evening, Chief Keef got us all hype for his new tape Bang 3 by dropping records featuring A$AP Rocky and Mac Miller, and now the full thing has arrived. This comes as a bit of a surprise, as it was initially scheduled for release on August 18th.
Dropping two years since the last installment in the Bang series, the new tape features 15 new tracks, and has guest appearances from Rocky, Miller and Jenn Em. Response to the two aforementioned tracks has been surprisingly glowing (pun intended), so it should be interesting to see if people fuck with the full tape. Vinyl heads rejoice, Jay Z'sMagna Carta Holy Grail is getting re-released on a 7" double vinyl set by Jack White & Third Man Records, who claim that the set comes with a hidden Jay Z track:
"Most exciting about this double LP is certainly the concealed postcard flexi disc hidden within the back cover and only accessible to those willing to take a knife to the iconic packaging. Once freed of its casing, this flexi disc plays a super secret hidden track. You'll just have to hear it for yourself, because we sure don't plan to ruin the mystery of it here." Very intriguing. Hopefully by "hidden track" they really mean "unreleased track." Watch the promotional vid below. If you can't wait for the internet to leak the track, cop the set for $20 here Since Meek Mill called out Drake for relying on it, ghostwriting has been a hot-button issue in rap once again. Wisely, someone decided to ask Ice Cube (who allegedly wrote the majority of the lyrics on N.W.A.'s Straight Outta Compton) to weigh in on the new controversy during a recent interview.
"I don't think it ever mattered in record making," Cube said when asked about the importance of self-penned lyrics in hip-hop, "I don't think people care what it takes for you to make a good record, just make sure it's good." Also comparing the process to building a house, Cube added that you do get "extra points" in his book if you write your own rhymes.
Last month, Warren G shared a track that featured the first posthumous Nate Dogg vocals we've heard in quite some time, the "Our House"-interpolating "My House," and today, he's back with another. Also taken from his upcoming Regulate... G Funk Era II EP, "Keep On Hustlin" features Nate, as well as Jeezy and Bun B.
The hook on here is more the vein of the Nate Dogg we know and love, with his smooth baritone pipes coming across gangster as ever. In fact, "Keep On Hustlin" sounds so legit in its 90s G-Funk sound, it could have been preserved in amber for 20 years. It was all good just a week ago. Well, a little over a week, but you get the point. After calling out Drake on Twitter with allegations that he used a ghostwriter, Drake responded with a warning shot on "Charged Up." Then, after four days of silence, Drake decided to let off another diss track called "Back To Back." Finally, following a massive amount of hilarious memes (because the internet is awesome), Meek responded with "Wanna Know" – which also brought on a wave of hilarity.
California cookouts are quite possibly one of the most priceless imports the state has to offer. I mean, the finest of herbals may count also, but it's surely not water. Anyways, while Cali may have the summer barbecues on lock Atlanta may come in at a close second (with, of course, the nudie bars and/or Coca Cola taking the top spot for them). As such, Scotty ATL invited Young Krizzle, No Genre affiliate London Jae and Gold Griffith to experience one for themselves for the latest set of visuals from his Traffic Jamz project, and this was the end result.
Remember when French Montana touted his Kanye West-produced, Wayne and Rick-guested high-profile collaboration "Lose It" as the song of the summer? Well, Fetty Wap, D.R.A.M. and Drake may, at the moment, currently beg to differ.
Either way the four horsemen reunite for the single's visual treatment, directed by longtime MMG affiliate SpiffTV. Holed up in the crazy house, whose founders apparently never met a light or cable bill they liked, the three are primarily flanked by a bevy of bottles, beauties and a severe lack of doctors to help any of the patients. So, apparently, they're all in Arkham Asylum then. Makes sense. Anyways, watch the clip below. |
